Baby's in Reno With the Vitamin D

OK. I am officially a curmudgeon. This time, the film was The Avengers. When a movie is solid with action sequences, it all blends into one and becomes as dull as listening to the engines hum on a jumbo jet.

I fell asleep.

I actually fell asleep.

Just after the Hulk showed up and all the stuff began to blow up.

Then, after finishing the film with the aid of some severe finger-jabs from Cara Sposa, I went upstairs to bed and read a couple more chapters of Orhan Pamuk. The chapter where Galip, still looking for his wife, visits a brothel full of Turkish movie star look-alikes who pose and act out sequences from old films before bedding their clients.

Maybe I always was an old fart. I seem to recall going to get a book during the car chases that used to be the main feature of nearly every movie and TV show in the 70s.

And I was never into the whole beefcake pantyhose schtick. When other kids read Marvel, I was reading Eerie (actually had this issue), House of Mystery/Secrets, stuff like that. There was a stall in Murree where comics from the sixties and seventies, their edges yellowed and dusty, were piled up in stacks on plywood-sawhorse tables. The proprietor never got rid of anything, so if it didn't sell, it stayed on that table for years and years. I went looking for a picture of Mall road to see if it's still there. I found this picture. The store used to be right behind the building on the left, where the white minivan is emerging.

I'm sorry. I guess I just can't do a lot of the genre stuff anymore. At least not semi-vertically. At least not the sociopaths versus psychopaths stuff. Though I kind of liked the Watchmen.

Sigh.

Love that photo, and love even more that you've *been* there. Lived there.

Well, Islamabad at least. But Murree is high above the pine-line, so it snows in winter and it's cool most of the summer. It's a summer get-away for people down in 'pindi (the old regional capital)

I was just about the only person I know who wasn't wetting his/her pants with excitement over The Avengers. Just not into the whole comic book superhero thing. (Which is just as well, since if I was, I'd probably have been at the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises at the Century 16 a couple of weeks ago...)

I'll probably end up sitting through The Avengers at some point, since Beloved Husband's sister and her family are all comic book geeks. But maybe I'll learn from your example and have a nap instead. :)

(Ironically, my dad fell asleep during a movie theater showing of a James Bond film once--because he was jet-lagged after returning from a trip to Pakistan...)

Weird. I was actually thinking of "Live or Let Die" when I was remembering the car chases. And CHiPs, which was on Pakistan TV at the time. With all the kisses censored out, no matter how chaste.

Well, I can possibly diagnose part of the problem: The overwhelming majority of eye candy in that film is of the XY flavour. If your preference is for XX-flavoured eye candy, well, there's a lot less of that. ;-D

I gotta say I loved it. This coming from someone who never read the comic books or saw any of the other films.

Cuz, yanno, not only a Joss Whedon thing, but also....ALL that XY flavoured eye candy!!!

Yeah, perhaps I should stick to films with car chases like this!
