I seem to find myself disliking them more and more as time goes on.

Well, I can't fault them on their strategy. This more or less hands them the Australian/NZ market on a plate. And cracks most of the middle east. And pushes BN back down into the tarpit with the other megatheria.

I haven't actually bought anything from since the queer-fail debacle a couple years back, making a point to buy local and independent whenever possible, or direct from the small press publisher if needed. Same thing with music. The ebook pricing standoff cemented my opinion. They're too willing to inflict collateral damage.

I'd been considering doing the amazon affiliate thing, though - maybe get some commission on referrals for books I'm in - but then they've been screwing with people that way as well, punishing individuals because they aren't happy with someone else.

Turns out Powell's Books has an affiliate program, though...

I don't know enough about Powells to say yea or nay to that idea, but it bothers me that if they ever challenged Amazon, they'd be bought out next.

Not that I'm a weeper over that one. I'm not much of a fan of BN or Borders, either. I remember when the big box stores were strangling all the indys. So now, I buy all my books at the local indy, and wait for special orders to come in. But if I absolutely CAN'T get it anywhere else, and must have it, I suppose I'd order from Amazon again. Hasn't happened in a few years, though.

Powell's is an independent bookseller in Portland OR with a strong web portal. I think they've expanded to 5 or 6 physical stores, all in that area.

Oh, I didn't know they had real stores. I thought they were ONLY a web portal. Good to know, thanks.
