So, when your laptop decides it's funny to lock up whenever you log into it on Friday the 13th. And then a single colour profile causes constant crashes and means you have to log in as root to get into your encrypted home directory. And then a kernel panic happens on every boot, using every combination of boot sequence or method. And then, while you're trying to recover files from the disk and the battery opens up and spills lithium cells on the ground....

It's time to get a new Laptop. Three battery changes, two power sources, three keyboards, and a creeping tea stain inside the screen. Oh, yes, and screws that keep falling out and a lid that won't hold closed anymore. And everything that's happened in the past week. Yep, time to take it out and shoot it.

Can't say I don't get the most out of my equipment, though. If computers were people, I'd be remanded for severe abuse.

DID manage to get my pictures off it before it died the death of a thousand cuts, though.

Yep, and everything else was in dropbox. But now I don't have a machine that can run my old accounting software. Hope I don't get audited anytime soon.

Ah, Dropbox! Where I keep all my writing. Just in case...

And an excellent vector for bringing your viruses back to you when you've gotten rid of them. ;)

I'm sure the day will come when my linux laptop gets a virus, but so far, so good :)

I'm still picking out a laptop. It'll take some time, I think. I'd go with Ubuntu if there was a better text editor. I can't justify windows at all.

How's your experience with Linux been so far? It's been over a decade, hasn't it?

I don't know if it has been over a decade. I've lost track. Certainly a good 8 years, at least.

I find it absolutely fine, but then, my needs are simple. I don't play games. I write my novels in Openoffice/LibreOffice. Use gmail. Lean for ripping CDs (less of that now that I buy my music as mp3s), calibre for playing with ebooks.

I recently switched from fedora to ubuntu on my home laptop and found the transition to be remarkably easy.

I would love to just use Ubuntu on commodity hardware, but having to deal with people's formatting issues on Word is a real problem. I find that OO doesn't do that good a job of interoperability. And there's still just too many files from Adobe I need to work with.

So it's looking like either doing all my work on the desktop and doing drafting, browsing, and email on something cheaper like that, or even a tablet, or getting another MacBook. I suppose, in extremis, I could VNC to the desktop and do the critical changes there.

Let the experiments begin....
