So, I was going to do a post about how I discovered the ultimate debugging tool: Send everyone away, out of the house, to another city. Then Put on Beethoven's 9th Symphony so loud you can feel it in the bones. Then flush all caches, wipe all previous imports and merge the different versions of the same program and follow the line of execution down the path of least resistance. It works!

But no. I overheard a great little bluesy riff on the radio whilst having dinner with Cara Sposa. I signalled to listen. She said "that's cool". It was just loud enough to make out a few of the lyrics. Google suppled the source. And then I discovered... I've found an anthem! I feel like a teenager again! I actually have found a song where every single line speaks to me right now, right how my state of mind is parallaxed. This hasn't happened since I was seventeen and heard Bowie's "Bewlay Brothers" (ETA: or was that "Quicksand"? Whatever it was, it was absolutely the final word ever and forever. I'm sure of that ;) ). (all this must be a sign of impending senility) Anyway, here it is. David Gray's "Draw the Line":

A poem has already emerged. I see a short story soon.

Well, looks like I've got a couple of songs to look up. But Seeger is always better live.

Ack--if you're going to listen to "The Tip of My Tongue," it absolutely has to be the "live at Eddie's attic version" (and actually, not the one that's on YouTube, but a different one which I'll point you too soon... and actually, I realized the Cat Empire song where I liked the live version better than the album version was actually The Chariot. I liked specifically this version.

And as for Pete Seeger, I bought one live version, but I liked this YouTube version better.

So yeah, this is the only version of "The Tip of My Tongue" that I really like. It's faster and lighter than other versions.

I like it. I just wish I wasn't in programmer-mode yesterday so that I could give it a proper listen. Time for that later this week, though!

Do you find you need to do that? Practically channel a whole different POV in order to get some kinds of work done?

Yes, and moreso as time goes by. I used to be able to switch modes and moods very easily; now it's harder. I used to be able to take advantage of tiny patches of time for writing, but now I need longer blocks in order to sink into the right mind-set.

I'm feeling it more and more as well. It seems to be tied to losing the highs and lows as time goes by.
