Let's Call the Whole Thing Off

Interesting article on NPR: Why modern tomatoes lack real flavour. Apparently, it all comes down to a genetic factor for uniform ripening that was crossbred into industrial tomato strains.

Do. Cherokee Purple is very nearly the perfect tomato, as I've discovered by going to tomato tastings around here. One farmer we know grows something like fifty different kinds, so there's one for every palate.

But the really cool part is how the seed always breeds true, so you can take any heirloom variety home, and if you like it, you can plant the seed and expect to have it for as long as you're willing to grow them.

I may have difficulty finding such things here -- we never did have Cherokees in this country :)
