So, there was this crime drama a while back with a Ear-Them-Bow-Bells-Oi-I-Come-From-Essex-In-Case-You-Couldn't-Tell fixture that seems necessary in any crime drama set in London. Whenever he referred to graft, he'd say something like "She's taking a bun" or "He's taking the bun for looking the other way."

So, mostly just to have something to occupy my head while picking blueberries, and flush with cultural arrogance that NATURALLY this would be a cockney thing, I tried to work out what the cockney rhyming slang was that "bun" referred to. I thought I had something promising with "sticky" (tricky?). Couldn't for the life of me figure out what rhymed with "currant". "Cinnamon" would never come up, and "jelly" is one cultural reference off...

So I gave up and looked up on Google and got nowhere until I realized I'd totally misheard "bun" and it was "bung". As in to "bung someone into the river". Which never really made sense to me...

[Were you thinking large barrel-stoppers? I was.]

So, it turns out it's a corruption of "pung" for "purse". You toss a purse to someone for winning a match, carrying out a job, doing a favour, etc., etc., and "bunging" as a synonym for "tossing" comes from purse-passing. Nothing to do with opening barrels at all. No, really. Even worse, it's FRISIAN! Someone put Frisian in "my" (entirely personal version of) London.

Oh, and "currant bun" is apparently slang for "sun", as in male child, thing in the sky, or newspaper with reputation for phone-hacking.

So, does this count as inappropriate appropriation? ;)

Counts as good fun--which rhymes--and I hope wakanomori has a chance to read it. I may have to preemptively read it to him.

You know, we all need to meet-up at a con somewhere and organize a drive-by reading!

That would be excellent, if unlikely

Yes, unlikely. But someday! Though apparently not at Readercon, from what I hear.

Not the way things stand now, I guess, unless there've been some new developments in the past twelve hours that seventeen or more people on my friends list haven't already posted about. Oh, the acres of words I typed out to you originally on that score, both here and in an email, before deciding, oh eff it; why am I letting this occupy such a huge portion of my brain space, let alone contemplating inflicting it on you. Hence the brief comment up above, instead.

I kind of figured. I was going through my budget and all. I was actually thinking of dropping my odd-year WorldCon attendance to pay for a foray into ReaderCon (transportation-wise, I have no cheap options, and it's an expensive town to visit).

But even if this all clears up.... I dunno if I'm still interested. It's a big let-down for everybody.

Oh, btw, wakanomori did read this! And enjoyed it very much--I overheard him talking about it to Little Springtime.

Etymology is always more fun than it seems!
