A Letter from Bukavu

Sleepless because somewhere in the world, there is unrepentantly evil stupid happening. If that isn't hubris, what is?

And bad memories. The border-town of Bukavu has a whole special class of hell in my head which I won't get into because this isn't about then, this is about now. This letter was written to Todd Akin and all his kind. It needs reading.

And sadly, the most coherent thought I have on this is that the "Founding Fathers" never once enshrined the idea in law that we should respect each other's religion, only that we should not establish one for the State. The sad part is that I find myself endorsing that statement both coming and going. I am left feeling that some religions deserve to be scorned, discredited, and overturned. Todd Akin's, certainly. And where does that spiral end?

My reserves of metta, never very fluid, have dried up. See you all later.

The guy's a total twat. I actually hope he doesn't drop out of the race and then loses. I hope this whole debacle opens the eyes of some folks who really need their eyes opened.

(But you also keep misspelling his name. It's Akin, not Aikin.)

Ah, right. Thanks. BTW, I think you can unscreen now.

Yes, the thing that doesn't seem to have been said--or that I haven't heard being said--in all this conversation is that rape is frequently used as a tool of war, in, frex. the DRC and former Yugoslavia, where the purpose is precisely to make the women of the enemy people bear "your" babies.

If I were to speculate, I'd say that he said what he wishes were true, but said it as fact, a thing that I see people do frequently, especially people (often men) who are told that it is a failing not to speak with assurance. Akin wishes no baby could be conceived in violence, because that way he doesn't have to have uncomfortable feelings about his position that there should never be abortions. But what he said is just simply completely wrong. I wish THAT would get said, every time his stupid statement gets repeated.

I just found this comment. Looks like my mail alert never happened.

But yes, that's what I found so f---ing disturbing about Akin. It's as if he said "if she gets pregnant, she wanted it anyway." Like "dressing like that, she was asking to be raped". Or "if she drowns, she's a god-fearing woman. If she doesn't drown, she's a witch."

What I disrespect about him most is his failure to have the courage of his convictions. If he wants to assert that all life is sacred, from the fertilized-egg stage, dandy. Then he needs to just say, "Even if this life is conceived in a vicious act of violence, even an unnatural act of a parent against a child, even then, it's sacred." And live with the fallout of that. But no. Instead he has to suck his thumb and tell himself a story about how every baby is a happy-joy-joy baby, and if you've got a baby in your tummy, it's because you acquiesced to the act that put it there. Jesus, it's just so stupid and wrong.

Yes, I think we're on the same frequency with that one.
