They found his skeleton years later, his heart, still red as if blood pumped through it, shriveled in the cage of his ribs.

We cut the elm logs from some branches. Little did we know that elm "burns like old graveyard mould" (i.e. slow, unreliably, and with much smoke). So they've had a long time to cure (and crack).
