Mayapple Cow Parsnip Forest

Hmm, this is a different plant from what I know as mayapple. What I know as mayapple is Podophyllum peltatum. What you've got there looks like what I'd call cow parsnip, Heracleum maximum. But that's the thing about everyday names; they vary from place to place.

Where I am, the water hemlock is in bloom. It does a heart good to know one has access to a deadly poison.

I think you're right. There were definitely may apples in the lower parts of the stand, but that's not what's making the forest.

The resident biologist is on the case! We'll see what she has to say.

Verdict is "cow parsnip". As opposed to "Cowbane". But definitely not Mayapple.
