If We Shadows about to be released

I've been waiting to be able to share this. My good friend and writing workshop colleague, D. E. Atwood's YA novel (If We Shadows) is going to be released on an accelerated schedule next week. Atwood has a real understanding for the difficulties of teenage life to begin with, but deals with the particular difficulties of being a transgendered teen with aplomb and verisimilitude that I've not seen often, and handles the genre elements with a minimum of drama and gimmickry.

I'm not a great reader of YA (surprise, surprise), but while this novel was being threshed out, I was impressed by the clean, accessible style, the pace, and the plot development. I kept thinking... this person knows writing, is professional, and has a keen understanding of her genre.... this book is a winner!

So, if this kind of story appeals to you or somebody who knows this situation, I strongly recommend you pop by the website and pick up a copy.

That looks like the kind of book I like.

Cool. Well, if you do get a copy and like it, I'd appreciate you mentioning it publicly. It's a new imprint that is bravely taking on these marginalized stories, and I think they could use as much profile as they can get.

I see you liked it a bit. BTW, I suspect you made a writer at career's beginning learn to trust herself a bit more.

Well, Goodreads is for readers, and I hope my review will get some people interested in trying the book. (I also went over and urged Jim Hines to read it.)

But the author? If that is a first novel, I am blown away in envy. If it's a twenty-fifth, still blown! (Also, the twenty-years junior high and high school teacher in me rejoiced to only notice one tiny grammatical error. Such a pleasure, after a couple of recent reads full of 'em.)

Yep. First novel. I'm so glad you liked it. She's a fan of yours, too, so it means a lot.

It's a very current topic. Have the publishers considered approaching Cindy Pon and Malinda Lo at diversityinya.tumblr.com? They might give it coverage. They also have a Wordpress blog with the same name, and it may be easier to get in touch with them over there.
