Hear me, all ye gods and fishes:

The remarkable and distinguished birdhousefrog is organizing a writer's workshop at ReConStruction.

The format is similar to the one I went through in Anticipation—participants are put into groups. Each person gets three other person's manuscripts to critique (well in advance). For two hours, you sit with these three other persons and two professional writers who will also critique all the work.

If you have been getting softball critiques ("ooo! squee! I just love your Space Aardvark story") or unhelpful advice ("I'd rewrite this whole thing to make your main character a Space Aardvark, 'cause Space Aardvarks are way cool!"), these workshops are an excellent opportunity to get a serious appraisal of your work, no unconsidered holds barred.

Oz knows her stuff, knows how to organize these things, and pays attention to follow-through. In our case, it even led to an online workshop. It isn't a ticket to publication, but it certainly has got some of the people in our workshop working and contributing regularly, which is the hard part of writing, at least for me.
